Answers : How did you do?

How many genera (plural of genus) of gibbons are there?

d. There are four genera of gibbons. A genus is a taxonomic category; genus comes above species and below family, and is denoted by a capitalized Latin name (it is the Homo in Homo sapiens). The gibbon generas are Hylobates, Hoolock, Symphalangus, and Nomascus.

2 How many species of gibbon are there?

The answer is a tie between c. (17) and d. (I think I will wait until the next major research report comes out). On page 38 of John Steckley’s Gibbons: The Invisible Ape a list of the naming situation of gibbons as it stood in late 2014 is provided.

3. What species of gibbon are you most likely to see in a zoo in North America?

a. H. lar or white handed gibbons. Steckley refers to these as “default” gibbons because they are so common in zoos. The backs of the hands of H. lar are not the only parts that are white. Their face has a white ring around their big dark eyes, nose and mouth. Their feet are white, too.

4. What genus of gibbon is the largest in size?

The answer is b., siamangs. With arms the length of the height of an average human being (or taller), the siamangs win, fused feet down.

4/4: Expert! Your gibbon knowledge is bananas!

3/4: Good job!

2/4: 50%? You barely passed!

1/4: Try again! You can do better!

0/4: You're a goof! Most humans evolved from apes, but you were left behind!
